What New Media Means to Me

I think of new media is using all available media to communicate message, almost as though nothing is off limits in terms of new technology and software. I also think of it as taking existing media (television, magazines, videos and dvds) and reconfiguring their use (watching Lost online, reading People magazine online, etc). I had never thought about the implications of globalization in new media until I read the articles and wikipedia entries, but now I realize that is another area of new media. It transcends distance and relationships and cultural divides.

The idea of new media transcending distance and building relationships is really interesting. Why do you think new media is so adept and creating community? Is it agency afforded to new media consumers, the feeling of interactivity?
Your idea about nothing being off limits makes me wonder about the importance of power relationships in regards to new media.

I agree with you (and with Jen) about the significance of new media being able to transcend distance and to communicate with others in ways not possible before. I think that the idea of re-mediating our texts (such as reading People online, which is actually different than reading it in print) existed before, but we are now seeing it on a much larger scale and in far more ways than was possible not long ago. Even looking at how the same information from the same source is available in different media (say CNN on TV, on their website, and on portable devices) shows how the same producer has to consider different contexts, media capabilities, audiences, and time constraints.

i wonder what it says about the audience when they have a media preference. for example, i love to READ articles on CNN.com and LISTEN to CNN, but i rarely seek out videos to watch. and i'm not a huge youtube fanatic, i'll watch links that are sent to me. what does it take to help others to embrace new media?? and is it necessary to be able to adapt to changing forms of media? can you be a text based person in an increasingly non-text based society?

The idea of new media transcending distance was one of the more interesting points to me too. While email is in some respects the same as regular mail, we no longer have to wait for days to receive information sent by others from other geographic spaces.

Too with new media I think of the idea that I can have an electronic copy of a doucment, print it and send a copy of it to myself as being novel. It means now that my mail can be used as my own database or storage device.
